TMS Treatment and Cocaine Addiction; Research (conducted in rodents and humans) tells us the following about the role of TMS treatment in cocaine addiction:
When high-frequency TMS is applied to the relevant brain regions in patients with cocaine addiction, it stimulates regions with reduced activity (such as the prefrontal cortex, regions that regulate decision-making and coping behaviours, and impulse control centres).
It increases interaction across the synaptic cleft, which enables communication between nerve cells (neurons). It increases the plasticity of nerve cells.
It increases neurotrophic factors (growth factors produced by nerve cells in the brain, such as BDNF).
